    Abstract

The ovaries of 83 crossbred gilts were autotransplanted to the uterus, the intestine, or the body wall by a two-step process. Gilts with both ovaries transplanted to the uterus or to the body wall had normal estrous cycles. Unilaterally ovariectomized gilts with the remaining ovary attached to the intestine did not cycle and developed large ovaries with numerous luteinized follicles. These data indicate that the normal ovarian uterine circulation is not mandatory for gilts to exhibit normal estrous cycles, and feedback from ovaries autotransplanted to the intestine does not reach the hypothalamus to control gonadotropic output from the anterior pituitary
