Abstract

Pulsed laser deposition technique was used to deposit 1 μm thick titanium oxide and aluminum oxide coatings on Inconel 718 substrates. The coatings were characterized by Field Emission SEM, TEM, AFM, and grazing incident XRD. The tendency of the substrate and the coatings to produce metal sulfides and carbon deposit from heated JP-8 fuel was tested in a flow reactor at 47°C fuel temperature and 34 atm fuel pressure for 24 hr. Ti and Al oxides coatings on Inconel 718 inhibited metal sulfide formation and reduced the amount of carbon deposited on surfaces exposed to hot jet fuel.
