Abstract

Effects of mono- and poly-aromatic compounds, nitrogen compounds, diesel additives and moisture on adsorptive desulfurization of the simulated diesel fuel over a commercial activated carbon have been investigated. The results show that the coexisting mono-aromatics, even at a concentration of 10 wt %, have only a slight effect on the adsorption capacity of the activated carbon for sulfur removal, while the poly-aromatics have a significant effect, even at a concentration less than 1.0 wt %. The inhibiting effect of poly-aromatics increases in the order of naphthalene ∼ fluorene < methylnaphthalene < phenanthrene. The presence of a trace amount (100-1,000 ppmw) of organonitrogen compounds, diesel additives (2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methyl-phenol, 2-ethyl hexyl nitrate, and polyethylene vinyl acetate) or moisture has a strong effect on adsorptive desulfurization performance of the activated carbon, as these molecules with higher dipole moment have stronger adsorptive affinity with the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface, which inhibits the adsorption of the sulfur compounds on the adsorption sites.
