Abstract

The physical concepts and mathematical techniques required to analyze and understand the effects of dry friction on aerodynamically unstable rotor stages have been developed. A lumped parameter model has been chosen for the rotor stage, and the viscous damping associated with each blade is taken to be negative. The following issues are addressed: the nature and amplitude of a stable steady-state response, the maximum transient amplitude for which a bounded response exists, and the maximum negative damping that can be stabilized. Results are presented for three-, four-, and five-bladed disks.
