Abstract

A study on developing a methodology for determining the relationship between fuel composition and cloud point was carried out. The cloud points of two jet fuels, i.e., JP-8 and hydro-treated refined chemical oil, were determined for a fresh sample and an oxidized sample. The resulting polar fractions from each sample were oxidized at low temperature to simulate the effects of storage. The resulting polar fractions from each sample were isolated by low-pressure column chromatography based on a modified procedure developed for heavy crude oils. The fresh and oxidized samples had a significant discrimination in cloud point temperatures. In both cases, the oxidized fuel sample showed an elevated cloud point as compared to the fresh one. This suggested that oxygenated compounds played a role in reducing the cloud point. The compounds altered or played a role in the crystallization process.
