Abstract
The paper discusses the effects of soil-structure interaction on buried straight pipes subjected to a severe earthquake. A refined method is introduced to evaluate the interaction effects in addition to the simplified design method. Both soil layering effect and ground water table effect are also discussed. A number of typical pipe examples are investigated. The limitations and applicabilities of the simplified method are clearly pointed out. Feasible modification for the simple formulas is suggested.
