Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the effect of solvent type and conditions for regeneration of carbon adsorbents in adsorptive desulfurization. A commercial petroleum pitch based microporous activated carbon was chosen for the regeneration tests. Adsorption desulfurization tests were performed by using a model diesel fuel with 390 ppmw of sulfur concentration. The spent activated carbons were regenerated by using 3 different types of solvent (toluene, chloroform, and surfactant -Troton X-100, 0.1%), 4 solvent mixtures (50:50 vol. ethanol-water, ethanol-toluene, dichloromethane-toluene, and chloroform-toluene) under regular stirring or ultrasonic treatment in a batch system to determine the best solvent and the most effective method for the regeneration of the spent activated carbons. It was found that the best solvent is a mixture of 50%vol. chloroform and 50%vol. toluene, and the ultrasonic treatment has a strong positive effect on regeneration of the spent activated carbons.
