Effects of sulfur species on solid deposition from heated jet fuel on different surfaces

Abstract

The effects of sulfur compounds on carbon deposit accumulation in the presence of reactive superalloys (Inconel 718, Hastelloy C-276) and relatively inert refractory metal oxides (TiO 2, Al 2O 3, ZrO 2, SiO 2, Yttria stabilized zirconia, MgO) were studied. The sulfur content of the fuel, and in particular, the type of sulfur compounds present was an important parameter in the deposition process. Sulfur compounds reacted with the alloying elements to form metal sulfides, causing roughening of the alloy surface, which promotes the deposition of carbonaceous solids. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 228th ACS National Meeting (Philadelphia, PA 8/22-26/2004).
