Abstract

Trichothecene mycotoxins are highly irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. This activity may be responsible for the cutaneous and oral inflammatory lesions observed in fusariotoxicosis of chickens, stachybotryotoxicosis, and alimentary toxic aleukia (ATA). Long before trichothecenes were incriminated in the diseases above, “stachybotryotoxin” and “poaefusarin” 4 were recognized as irritant extracts of toxic food.
