Abstract

In this paper, we examine the efficacy of different equalization schemes for Discrete Wavelet Multi-Tone (DWMT) with relatively high average bandwidth efficiency (6 bps/Hz). Using simulated bit error rate (BER) performance results, we demonstrate that the sensitivity of DWMT to small amounts of distortion in the end-to-end channel makes it infeasible to use only FIR filtering at the DWMT receiver input. We also show that, while using only post-detection combining can provide much better performance than with only the finite impulse response (FIR) equalizer, the number of post-detection combiner taps required to achieve even mediocre performance can be quite large. Finally, BER performance results are used to demonstrate that the combination of an FIR equalizer at the DWMT receiver input and post-detection combining is more efficient than schemes which employ either the FIR equalizer or post-detection combiner alone.
