Abstract

Elastomeric products reinforced with carbon black are widely used in many dynamic applications where controlled damping of mechanical vibration is essential for performance. In the elastomeric compounds used in these applications carbon black serves both to modify the dynamic properties and to improve the strength properties. Proper selection of the type of carbon black for optimum performance in vibration isolation relies on knowledge of carbon black properties. To aid this selection, this article describes the effects that carbon black characteristics have on dynamic and failure properties in representative compounds on NR and IIR base, typically used for vibration isolators for engine mounts. This information would also have utility in other dynamic applications of these elastomers.
