Abstract
A graduate level, radar meteorology course taught during the spring of 1995 at the Department of Meteorology at Penn State included, as an application of theory, a series of assignments to do a complete dual-Doppler analysis. The students explored a research data-set taken from the recent TOGA-COARE experiment in the Eastern Pacific. Data from the ELDORA/ASTRAIA airborne Doppler weather radar were acquired and analyzed as part of this project, in conjunction with lecture material on the design and abilities of the radar and radar analysis software. The objectives of this assignment were to take students from the classroom into an actual research environment, show them how the many trade-offs involved in radar design are realized in features of the data collected, and to take them through all the steps of the radar data analysis to show that it really is a very simple process.
