Abstract

Fundamental understanding of cellulose fibers derived from plant cell walls has opened new horizons for the synthesis of nanoscale cellulosic particles and biopolymers with tailor-made functionalities, which have contributed to a broad range of advanced engineering applications. Subsequently, there has been significant attention to different aspects of nanocelluloses, ranging from preparation, classification, and functionalization to physical and chemical blending, nanocomposite fabrication, and applications. In this chapter, we endeavor to concisely communicate the history, rationale, and engineering motivations underlying the recent advances of nanocelluloses and their nanocomposites and detail the emerging aspects of nanocelluloses, which encompass new nanocellulose families and their superior properties, enhanced functionality, and novel applications. We envision that this chapter may serve as a quick guide for both general and professional audiences, providing the essential, up-to-date knowledge of the fascinating field of cellulose-based nanomaterials and nanocomposites.
