Abstract
The objectives of this study are twofold: (1) To identify and monitor the vaporizing species during the welding process. (2) To understand the effect of the presence of certain minor elements in the alloy on the vaporization behavior. In this study emission spectroscopy has been utilized to monitor the chemical species present in the plasma during laser welding; this, in turn, provides information on the alloying element vaporization from the weld pool. The material used for the study was AISI 201 stainless steel.
