Abstract

The development of human capital is a key to achieving and sustaining a competitive advantage in today's turbulent marketplace. This chapter aims to provide guidance on how to ensure that employee development contributes to the development of a healthy workplace through making it meaningful and beneficial for both employees and the organization. A number of studies have shown that individual differences influence propensity to participate and motivation to learn in development activities. Organizations are creating healthy workplaces and promoting employee well-being through applying what we know about how to facilitate learning to their employee development practices. The development of human capital is critical for both employee and organizational success. Research advances have advanced the understanding of employee development and the few studies that have been conducted suggest that learning opportunities are positively related to well-being.
