Abstract

This entry primarily examines United States (US) adolescent work in its many forms, including employment in the formal labor force; informal work, usually conducted in the young person's home or neighborhood; volunteering in non-profit and for-profit organizations; schoolwork; and other work-like activities that may not be widely recognized as work. While the bulk of research attention has focused on potentially negative effects of the intensity of employment on academic outcomes, this review addresses this concern as well as the prevalence and outcomes of other forms of adolescent work.
