EMS/Prehospital Care Medicine

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a subspecialty dealing with the management and provision of emergency medical care outside of a hospital setting. It encompasses multiple elements of out-of-hospital care including ground transport, critical care transport, and more specialized topics such as aeromedical transport, tactical EMS, confined space rescue, disaster medicine, and more. Fellows and EMS physicians work closely with paramedics and EMTs as well as law enforcement, fire, dispatch, and other emergency responders. EMS fellowships train physicians in medical direction and quality control as well as the education and credentialing of prehospital professionals. In addition to forging relationships with the community, many choose to pursue an EMS fellowship to work outside the typical environment for an emergency physician. EMS requires a minimum of 1 year of fellowship training after the completion of an emergency medicine residency. Typically, the path to fellowship includes obtaining experience with EMS services, conducting relevant research, building your CV and application, and entering the NRMP® Emergency Medicine Fellowship Match.
