Abstract
Cloud computing provides (1) virtually unlimited storage to archive and manage the increasing amount of data, (2) on-demand computing capability to support computing intensive applications, and (3) the services to effectively utilize the network, storage, and computing resources. These capabilities are enabled by a variety of technologies that contributed to the emergence of cloud computing. To help readers understand how cloud computing emerged and evolved, this chapter introduces the key enabling technologies for cloud computing, including hardware advancements, distributed computing, virtualization, distributed le systems, and Web x.0.
