Abstract
According to the Belgian Cardinal Mercier the citizens of his country had to show 'endurance' during the German occupation. This article examines if and how this idea is manifested in war diaries by authors such as Virginie Loveling, Stijn Streuvels, Georges Eekhoud, Adrien Bayet, Edmond Picard, Marie Gevers and Constance Graeffe.
