Abstract

Over the course of four years (eight semesters), the industrial engineering first year seminar course (one-credit) at Pennsylvania State University was revamped and infused with active learning modules to cover all major areas of industrial engineering. One of the motivations for these course changes was to increase student interest in the industrial engineering major as freshmen, in order to reduce the number of transfers into industrial engineering as upperclassmen. The course included an emphasis on getting students involved in industrial engineering student organizations while also getting students to participate in career events as freshmen in search of internship and co-op opportunities. Over eight semesters, 85% of the students taking this course went on to major in an engineering major while 53% of the students taking the course specifically majored in industrial engineering. Student evaluation of instruction via the end-of-course surveys indicate the course was excellent in terms of course quality and teacher effectiveness. The course was also successful in getting students involved in industrial engineering student organizations and securing internship and/or co-op opportunities.
