title = "ENHANCED CASTINGS BY THE USE OF ULTRASONICS.",
abstract = "It has been known for some time that the microstructure of cast metals can be modified by means of sonic or ultrasonic vibrations. Potential benefits of such treatment may be classified as (1) grain refinement, (2) reduction of gas content, porosity and shrinkage (pipe), (3) dispersion of other materials into a molten/solidifying metal, and (4) activation of metallurgical reactions. The authors efforts in this project focus on microstructural refinement (i. e. , monitoring and control) of aluminum alloys and analyzing the possibilities of improving the castability of these alloys with sonic and/or ultrasonic vibration.",
