Abstract

Aiming at the fast charging application for Electric Vehicles (EVs) using a residential local hybrid grid, this paper models a fast-charging network using the bidirectional three level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) DC-AC converter that is used as a traction inverter in EVs during propulsion mode. The proposed system models an AC-coupled local hybrid grid which includes local solar PV production, residential battery storage and local utility grid, that is capable of charging an EV battery at higher powers than otherwise provided by the On-Board Chargers (OBC). Utilizing the bidirectional NPC converter and the local hybrid grid will allow users to charge their EVs using the solar power generated during the day and stored in batteries more effectively.
