Abstract
An investigation was made of mechanical properties of silicon-alloyed cast steels with a high carbon content subjected to austempering. The steels contained 0. 6 to 1. 2% C, 1. 4 to 2. 4% Si, 0. 3% Mn, 0. 3% Mo, and also 1. 5% Ni. The results have shown that austempered steels having this composition can reach a high tensile strength (1300 to 1400 N/mm**2) and a yield point of approx. 1000 N/mm**2 in combination with good ductility and high toughness as well as an unusually high wear resistance. These properties are the result of the austempering-related microstructure consisting of bainitic finite and up to 47% stabilized austenite.
