    Abstract

A study was conducted focusing on the sensitivities of rainfall estimates from Ah to ΔA to drop oscillations and variations in drop size distributions (DSDs). DSDs were measured with a ground-based disdrometer during TOGA-COARE. In total there were 8804 DSDs. Each distribution was a 1-min sample having more than 10 drops and rainfall rate over 0.1 mm h-1. The resulting data show that rainfall accumulations obtained with the Ah-R relationship is less sensitive to DSD variations and drop oscillations compared to using the ΔA-R relationship.
