ETHICS IN REHABILITATION AND HUMAN SERVICES CAREERS

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter presents core introductory principles for recognizing, understanding, and confronting ethical dilemmas in human services settings. Readers are presented with the differences between ethics and the related frameworks of morality and responsibilities under the law. Using Kitchener’s model for ethical decision-making, sample ethical dilemmas present relevant, real-life issues similar to those that human services professionals are likely to face within the workplace. Additional topics related to ethical decision-making include the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), informed consent, and confidentiality. Timely issues such as technology use, social media, and cultural sensitivity are also addressed.
