Abstract
Biophytum sensitivum(L.)DC commonly known as life plant is a folk medicine used as antiinflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic drug. Ethnic groups use the plant since long as a source of crude drug, used effectively as synthetic drugs. The dried methanolic plant extract of B. sensitivum is potent and safe at high concentration and also found to have antiinflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activity. In the present study antiinflammatory property of the crude drug was estimated volumetrically by measuring the mean increase in hind paw volume of rats using carageenin, histamine and dextran. From the result methanolic extract showed significant activity as the reference drug like Indomethacin. The analgesic activity was assessed on mice by tail flick method; acetic acid induced writhing test and yeast-induced pyrexia using acetyl salicylic acid as standard. Plant extracts were administered in the doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight in animals.
