Abstract
Fe and Cr was evaluated as a binding phase in TiB2 hardmetal systems. Density and sintering behaviour was determined. Boron additions increased the density to up to 95% of theoretical density. A further densification could be obtained by hot pressing. The resulting TiB2 hardmetals of 100% density showed higher hardness than comparable WC-Co alloys. The cutting behaviour of TiB2 hardmetals on steel was comparable to a P20 WC-Co composition.
