Abstract

This paper compares several distinct approaches for providing user-network signaling in a Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN). The protocols are examined against B-ISDN functional objectives and performance considerations. In addition, they are compared in terms of the ease of introducing new services, common UNI/NNI signaling, offering equal opportunity for service providers, and backward compatibility. The study concludes that the protocols may be made similar in terms of providing functionality. Each of the protocols examined provides advantages and disadvantages in the other areas compared.
