Abstract

We evaluated Sanjivani Airway Mask (SAM™) as a supraglottic airway for ease of insertion, haemodynamic stability and untoward events in anaesthetized patients who were breathing spontaneously. We compared the results with another group of patients undergoing similar procedures using Laryngeal mask airway (LMA™). The SAM™ being a disposable, inexpensive and pre inflated device maintains the airway as LMA™. Untoward events like trauma due to the device, laryngospasm and cough were more in the SAM™ group of patients. These could probably, be due to the absence of any particular guidelines for determination of size of the SAM™ for any particular patient and requirement of a deeper plane of anaesthesia for insertion than LMA™. If proven by further multicentered trials SAM™ can be a replacement for the LMA™, particularly for biohazard patients coming for short surgical procedures.
