Abstract

Zhang et al. [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 5, 1601 (1988)] derived the Lorentz-Lorenz formula for a dielectric-magnetic substance by modeling its molecules into electric and magnetic dipoles that depend separately on the local electric and magnetic fields, respectively. They eventually obtained a result [Eq. (20) in their paper] that is obvious because they used (independent) electrostatic and magnetostatic models earlier in their paper to identify ϵ and µ separately.
