Abstract
In this paper, we propose a novel method for expanding the size of FDM/WDM passive star networks using high-power erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDF). In contrast to other proposed methods where each receiver would require its own EDF amplifier, the proposed method requires few amplifiers located at the central hub of the star network. The size of the network can be increased by m times using m narrowband EDF amplifiers with a sufficient level of output saturation power. Moreover, the optical amplifier bandwidth requirements are less stringent compared to those of other known methods. An additional advantage of our method is that existing networks can be expanded or interconnected requiring minor modifications.
