Abstract

This paper presents details of a special experimental set up and instrumentation for investigating the non-linear behavior of a cam-follower mechanism. The variable system parameters are; preload stiffness, cam shaft speed, and cam profile. The force along the follower axis is measured using a load cell. Also, mass displacement, and accelerometer signals are collected and analyzed. The system periodic response and its bifurcation patterns and transitions to chaotic behavior are monitored and discussed. The experiment illustrates a rich behavior presented in samples of time histories, phase portraits, Poincare maps and continuous wavelet scalograms.
