Abstract

The objective of this investigation is to study the fate of these structures as they convect downstream. The following questions are addressed: How do the vortices interact each other and with the wall as they travel downstream? How far downstream do they retain their identities? Do the vortices always decay downstream or are there conditions under which they can grow and become more energetic? . Smoke-wire flow visualization and hot-wire anemometry are used in this study. The experiments were conducted in a low-speed, low-turbulence, suction-type wind tunnel which was designed and constructed by the authors. A two-dimensional square cavity was mounted normal to the flow along one of the tunnel walls.
