N2 - The overall objective of the research program is to investigate the effect of the stratified ambient atmosphere on a fully burning vertical wall. In this paper, we present results from an experimental study on a laboratory-scale simulation of a stratified atmosphere in front of a vertical burning surface in a typical room fire. Measurements for vertical profiles of temperature and oxygen concentration are compared with actual room fire data. Also, preliminary data are presented for local burning rate for vertical plate samples of a solid fuel in a stratified atmosphere which are compared with theoretical predictions.
