Abstract

A numerical procedure is presented for predicting failure in laminated composites subjected to simultaneous intense localized heating and applied mechanical loads. The method consists of a non‐linear two‐dimensional, axisymmetric finite difference thermal analyser which considers the effects of surface ablation, radiation and convection losses and temperature dependent thermophysical properties. The thermal results are used in conjunction with a flat plate finite element code to predict the failure of laminated composites. Predictions based on the numerical analyses are compared with experimental results obtained from mechanically loaded graphite epoxy coupons spot‐irradiated at various intensities.
