Abstract

A microprocessor based system for use in underground coal mines is being studied as an in-mine tool for the prediction of incipient safety hazards from component failures of in-mine electrical power systems. A system designated as the Sequential Events Detection Analysis and Prediction System (SEDAPS) for the prediction of incipient electrical component failure is being developed around a minicomputer framework. The microprocessor-based system being studied eliminates many disadvantages found in the prototype SEDAPS, which is a minicomputer based system, while maintaining its hazard prediction capability. The most attractive aspect of this design is the feasibility of installing it in and about the mine. This paper presents the hardware system design of the microprocessor based SEDAPS along with a sketch of the microprocessor selection process.
