Abstract
This chapter addresses feeding practices of camelids from the perspective of the "nutritional triad," which addresses animal factors (e.g. physiologic state, body condition, health status), feed composition, feeding management and their interactions. It highlights specific Old World camels (OWC) data. The term "camelids" will be used inclusively to address both South American camelids (SAC) and OWC. Camelids are misrepresented as "pseudo-ruminants" due to differences in foregut anatomy with species from the Suborder Ruminantia. The camelid digestive process is similar to a moderately-sized browsing or grazing ruminant species with modifications resultant from their unique metabolic adaptations. Camelids, both SAC and OWC, are potentially susceptible to the full range of ruminant animal nutritional diseases. The chapter provides the most common camelid nutritional diseases. These include: protein-energy malnutrition, obesity, forestomach acidosis, hypophosphatemic rickets, selenium deficiency/toxicity, copper deficiency/toxicity, zinc-responsive dermatitis, and plant poisonings.
