Abstract
Females constitute less than 2% of the current population of death row inmates in the United States. Currently, 55 death row inmates are female, 21 of them in California. The reasons for such a small proportion may be chivalrous treatment toward female defendants in the criminal justice system at different stages of processing, including their greater likelihood to receive mercy and be spared from the execution; and that women are much less likely than men to commit a capital murder. Notable female offenders on death row have included Velma Barfield, Guin Garcia, and Karla Faye Tucker.
