Abstract
Instructors at The Pennsylvania State University report on their experience of developing a course in radar meteorology in conjunction with a field experiment utilizing the Doppler On Wheels (DOW) radars maintained by the Center for Severe Weather Research. The field experiment, coined the Pennsylvania Area Mobile Radar Experiment (PAMREX), was inextricably wedded to the classroom experience of the students. The unusual hands-on learning experience provided a firsthand taste of what research is all about, particularly field research, while also including fairly traditional lectures on the theoretical aspects of radar.
