Abstract

Long-term field measurements of the indoor and outdoor temperatures and air velocities were used to analyze the thermal environment in several typical Chinese Wannan traditional residential buildings in the summer. The results clarify some misunderstandings about traditional buildings, such as concerning the temperature distribution in the tall rooms and the temperature of the cool entry way. Also, detailed analysis of structures such as the raised shaft, the roof, the eaves and measurements of the temperature and wind velocity, etc., show that the shading is the most important element of the design characteristics of Chinese traditional residential buildings in Wannan and that natural ventilation is a less important effect.
