Abstract
In light of the continued growth in the popularity of finite element analysis (FEA), this article discusses the importance of including FEA computer applications in baccalaureate engineering programs. It explores the unique opportunity that engineering schools have to help close the gap between the theory and the application of FEA. It further describes the contributions that an engineering graduate can make to a project team when working in industry. An example problem is used to demonstrate that practical FEA experience is essential for the safe use of this modern computer tool. The article closes with a summary of issues dealing with implementing FEA into an engineering curriculum.
