Abstract
The validity of an elasto-plastic theory, derived for cohesionless granular materials, is established for bulk storage bins subjected to rapidly declining ambient temperatures. The results from a model test bin are compared to the values predicted by a finite element formulation based on the elasto-plastic theory. The static lateral pressures test results without surcharge and thermal lateral pressure results compare favorably with the finite element model values; whereas, the predicted and measured static lateral pressures with surcharge differ. This difference may be attributed to the inadequately defined boundary conditions for the finite element formulation for the current model test bin.
