Abstract

Several ways to design photonic crystals (PC) lenses by using the large near band edge dispersion in the effective refractive index (neff) was discussed. The practical PCs of finite thickness exhibited an neff with a thickness dependent oscillatory behaviour. Analysis showed the importance in accounting for the finite-size effect when designing high performance optical devices or components that used the highly dispersive properties of PCs.
