Abstract

A flow comparison of a water/glycerol solution, a non-Newtonian polymer solution, and bovine blood is performed in an electric artificial heart. Near-wall velocity profiles are measured using a 10-MHz pulsed Doppler ultrasound velocimeter. Estimates of local and convective acceleration, turbulence intensity, and shear rate are calculated. Results indicate that non-Newtonian characteristics have an important effect on the flow structure in the ventricle chamber.
