Abstract

The implementation of advanced Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) requires a convenient control model. This paper describes a modeling approach based on the concept of automata theory, called the Timed Extended Moore Machine Network (TEMMN), which provides a generic representation of complex discrete event systems. Using a distributed, bottom-up approach, with integrated timing features, a flexible manufacturing system can be modeled by the identification and specification of its components structure and interconnectivity. The TEMMN model is an attempt at providing a modular, scaleable, and flexible modeling scheme for FMS systems control.
