Abstract
Direct measurement of force produced by an operator on a tool during a job can be a difficult task, especially if this measurement needs to be done on many tools and many different jobs in short succession. Typically, indirect methods, such as grip force distributions with force-sensing resistors, either applied to the tool directly or, more efficiently, built in to a 'touch glove' worn by the operator, are utilized. Sometimes, even more indirect measurements, such as electromyography measurements of the muscles utilized by the operator, are used to estimate the forces utilized on the task. Such indirect measurements are quite good for obtaining a relative comparison of force levels required between different jobs or comparing different methods or tools utilized on the same job.
