Abstract
In March 1978, Richard L. Frautschi, then Head of the Department of French at Penn State, published an article about the recently inaugurated French-Business major-the first French B.S. in the country. The essay outlined not only the rationale and academic components for the degree but also the department's ideas about future developments. A visionary leader, Frautschi nurtured a culture of proactive thinking about programmatic changes (a form of strategic planning avant la lettre). Today we remain one of just two stand-alone French departments in the Big Ten.
