Abstract
The study of protein structure is now a legitimate topic in physics as well as in biochemistry. General methods for comparing and classifying the topologies of protein folding patterns are useful in organizing the structures that are known and enumerating possible protein structural patterns that have not yet been observed. A tableau representation of protein structures, suitable for manipulation and searching by algorithms, is described and an application to searching the Databanks of known structures for a set of combinations of substructures is reported.
