Abstract

Madden and Eng note trauma-informed approaches must be adopted in all phases of crisis management, particularly as it relates to internal stakeholders. They believe trauma-informed principles (physical safety, emotional safety, cultural responsivity, empowerment, peer support, trust, and collaboration) should be further integrated into crisis communication. Madden and Eng argue trauma-informed crisis communication management is about recognizing the prevalence of trauma in society – especially when crises are involved. They propose a new model of trauma-informed crisis communication management that can help to create a more holistic approach to crisis communication. This Chapter shares a focus on emotion with Chapter 26 by Schoofs, Claeys, and Koppen (empathy) and Chapter 29 by Tachkova (moral outrage).
