Abstract

This chapter discusses fuel quality and its influence on utility boiler design and impact on performance, with the emphasis on coal and biomass as fuels. Performance issues addressed include system capacity, heat rate, availability, and maintenance, and how they are affected by fuel quality. The effect of fuel quality on handling, storage, processing, and preparation is discussed. In addition, the effect of fuel quality on burner design and ignition stability is presented. Future trends are discussed, specifically focusing on continued use of biomass as a means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the utility sector.
